Peter Wray was trained as a painter, extending his practice into printmaking in the early 1970s, after being exposed to the richness and unique expressive power of the intaglio surface. With his background in painting, and being largely self-taught as a printmaker, the integration of painterly methodology into the graphic process was a natural development, and it is this combination of approach which gives his work its distinctive style.
Peter and his partner and fellow-artist Judy Collins enjoy a deep and resonant relationship with Penwith, where they will soon be relocating. Despite coming together from different artistic backgrounds, their response to materials, art process and landscape is very close, and this is nowhere more apparent than in their collaborative paintings, which evoke the landscape of the Penwith coastline, enabling their individual practices to move toward a meeting point and a natural progression towards a collective expression of individual, though shared, experience. |
