Ian North trained at Avery Hill College (1978 - 81) as a mature student, obtaining a B.Ed. Degree. He taught in Cornwall (1981-92) and now concentrates full-time on his artwork.
Throughout the year, Ian walks the landscape, regularly returning to the same location to record the environment in the different seasons and noting the changing light and weather conditions. Drawing and observation are an essential part of his progression towards a finished painting. Ian completes the majority of his paintings outside whilst observing the subject, often working on a small scale, which he feels allows for a more spontaneous and intimate approach. He is also attempting to deal with the complex issues of paint handling and is concerned with searching for an image beyond mere topographical representations. |
