Possessing a BA(Hons) and an MA in Fine Art from The University of the West of England, Victoria Coombes is a studio based artist working at Spike Island, Bristol. Coombes is highly interested in form and the exploration of paint and its potential to express anything meaningful at all. Her work evolves from very exacting processes. There is a long involved preparation of surfaces and materials, i.e. gesso, primers, oil paint, inks and raw pigment. Through this process, she explores the tactile and seductive qualities of the medium by building up layers of colour and texture. Therefore, it is in the main substance inspired. Coombes’ work is purely abstract painting, but the result of the aforementioned combination of structured decisions and happen-stance dictates the subject. As much paint comes off of the canvas as goes on when she is searching for her apparitional moment. Having roots in Cornwall, Coombes enjoys looking to the horizon and this is evident within her work.
